今回は、我々ChiQのSDGsの取り組みについてご紹介したいと思います。
持続可能な開発目標（SDGs：Sustainable Development Goals）とは，2015年9月の国連サミットで採択された「2030年までに持続可能でよりよい世界を目指す」国際目標です。
SDGsには主に17個のテーマ(地球規模の課題)がありますが、そのほとんど全ての問題がアフリカそして我々が事業活動をしているここケニアに凝縮されています。
貧困、教育の質の低さと不足、女性差別とレイプ等の性的暴行、不健康で不衛生、安全な水やトイレの不足、就職率の低さ、スラム地域、ゴミ問題、賄賂・汚職などなど、
例を上げだすときりがありません。
そしてこれらの問題を日常生活の中で頻繁に目にし、経験します。
そのため、我々にとってはSDGsとは、”どこかの誰かの為”ではなく、まさに我々が直面し、解決しなければいけない危機的な課題たちなのです。
そして、我々はそのSDGsを体現すべく、事業活動をしております。
では、事業活動がどのようにSDGsに関係し、どのようにそれらの課題解決に繋がっていくのか、について説明していきたいと思います。
ChiQは、2019年にケニアの首都ナイロビで日本食レストランを開店することで事業活動を開始致しました。
我々のビジョンは「ChiQ(地球)のより良い環境構築と、そこに住む多くの人々に幸せを与える」です。
目標と夢はとてつもなく大きいです。
ChiQのスタッフ50名の98%は女性で、特にシングルマザーの雇用促進をしております。スタッフと密にコミュニケーションを取りながら、スタッフ教育を徹底しております。月に1~2回、スラムエリアにある学校へ訪問し、無料ダンスレッスンと炊き出しを開催しております。
現在は、ナイロビに3店舗のお店を構え、それ以外に日本のトマトや苺等の農業事業や、大手スーパーマーケットへの日本食卸事業等幅広く活動しています。
直近では、日本食材の輸出入も始める予定で、その後も事業の規模を拡大予定です。
事業拡大につれて、お客様の数はもちろん、スタッフの数は増え、多くの雇用を創出することが出来ます。また、スタッフの給与向上は、スタッフのお子様の教育支援にも繋がります。
また、我々の事業活動により、周辺の関連業者(食材のサプライヤーやショッピングモール、広告宣伝会社等)は潤い、彼らも共に(Win-winな関係で)事業拡大することが可能となります。
事業で得た利益の一部を、スラム地域の貧しい子供たちへの配給や教育支援費として地域社会へ還元致します。
この一連のサイクルを、自立自走で少しずつ大きくしていくことこそが唯一のSDGs達成の方法であると信じております。
補助金や、他人のお金を頼りにしていては事業は長く続けることは出来ないと思います。
ケニア人の若くてエネルギー溢れるスタッフと共に切磋琢磨しながら、豊かで思いやりの溢れた理想社会を創造する為に日々精進して参ります。
In this issue, we at ChiQ would like to introduce our SDGs initiatives.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are international goals “for a sustainable and better world by 2030,” adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015.
There are 17 main themes (global issues) in the SDGs, and almost all of these issues are concentrated in Africa and Kenya, where we are doing business.
Poverty, poor quality and lack of education, discrimination against women and sexual assault, poor health and sanitation, lack of safe water and toilets, low employment rates, slum areas, garbage problems, bribes and corruption, etc.
The list of examples is endless.
We see and experience these problems frequently in our daily lives.
Therefore, for us, the SDGs are not “for someone else,” but are really critical issues that we need to face and solve.
And we are doing business to embody the SDGs.
I would like to explain how our business activities are related to the SDGs and how they are connected to solving these issues.
ChiQ has started its business activities by opening a Japanese restaurant in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, in 2019.
Our vision is “to build a better environment for ChiQ (Earth) and bring happiness to the many people living there”.
Our goals and dreams are tremendous.
98% of ChiQ’s 50 staff members are women, and we especially promote the employment of single mothers. We communicate closely with our staff and provide thorough staff training. Once~2 times a month, we visit schools in slum areas and hold free dance lessons and give them free meals.
Currently, we have three stores in Nairobi. In addition, we are engaged in a wide range of other activities, such as an agricultural business for Japanese tomatoes and strawberries, and a Japanese food wholesale business to major supermarkets.
Most recently, we plan to start importing an Japanese foodstuffs, and we plan to expand the scale of our business after that.
As our business expands, we will be able to increase the number of customers as well as the number of staff, creating many jobs. In addition, higher salaries for our staff will help support the education of their children.
In addition, our business activities will enrich related businesses in the surrounding area (food suppliers, shopping malls, advertising companies, etc.), enabling them to expand their business together (in a win-win relationship).
A portion of the profits from the business will be returned to the local community in the form of food distribution to poor children in slum areas and educational support expenses.
We believe that the only way to achieve the SDGs is to gradually increase the size of the business through this cycle of self-reliance and self-direction.
We do not believe that a business can continue for long if it relies on grants or other people’s money.
With our young and energetic Kenyan staff, we will continue to work hard to create an ideal society that is prosperous and full of compassion.
